On a perfect autumn night in 1984, a retired policeman charged into his neighbor’s garage, hell-bent on collecting a long-overdue narcotics debt.

Instead, he met two shotgun blasts—one shredded his chest, and the other ripped a hole in his back as he tried to flee. A half hour later, he flatlined in the ambulance. But this cop wasn’t about to leave so easily.

The ensuing court trial released a flood of stunning revelations about three of the most extraordinary crimes in American history—

Examscam, the statewide black-market sale of stolen police entrance and promotional exams that destroyed Massachusetts' Metropolitan Police force.

A massive cocaine and marijuana distribution operation that moved a half billion dollars of drugs in less than two years.

And the daring robbery of the Depositors Trust Bank—at $30 million, one of the largest-ever heists in the world.

All involving one man—the shotgun victim, Joey Bangs.

When I found out that there was a book about Joe Bangs, I had to get it. I am a registered nurse who happened to work in the emergency room at the hospital where Mr. Bangs went after the shooting. My recollections are quite a bit different than the book, but it was a good read anyway.
At any rate, it waa intense and episode that is burned into my memory.
We got a call saying there was a gunshot victim coming in. It was a little after 11pm at night. My sister in-law was the other nurse there that night. We both went into the trauma room to prepare for the patient coming in. Mr Bangs was accompanied by his girlfriend and some cops. He actually walked in. I remember that his girlfriend had tight leather pants on and had big Medford hair, as was the style back in the 80's. I think she was a strawberry blond. Mr Bangs got onto our trauma stretcher and lay back. I was getting an IV ready and had my back to the bed. My sister in-law strarted to remove his leather jacket. I will never forget her saying to me, "Oh (my name), shot gun!", as pellets were falling on the stretcher and the floor. She picked up a pellet and offered it to a Medford cop. I recall not feeling too safe myself, thinking that someone would come in to finish him off. When we got his clothes off, he had a large, impressive hole in the pectoral area of his right chest. He had another smaller (but still impressive) hole in his back. We were frankly surprised that he was able to talk and had stable vital signs. I clearly remember him taking off hs gold Rolex watch, and giving it to his girl friend. "Take the Rolex". I think she finally left after that.
In our ER at night, we had one doctor. This particular doctor was not even a surgeon. He was a gastroenterologist! Hw was moonlighting at night in the ER! We (my wife was also a nurse in another department, but came down to wait for me) put in a call for the chest surgeon on call. The gastroenterologist talked to them and they said they would be there in an hour! We would have transported him into Boston if he needed chest tubes and immediate surgery, but since he was stable, we knew we could wait for the surgeon.
We figured his jacket, and the angle in which he was shot saved him. I guess from what I read, he had cocaine in his system too , which is great for stopping bleeding. It was amazing to see such a big holes in his chest and back without anything more serious happening.

Excellent book. Fills in a lot of blanks for those of us who lived through it.
A well written piece of Boston history. A page ,turner from the get go. Cohesive and engaging I would recommend this book.
Read the book, couldnt put it down once I started reading it,exceptionally written his nephew just finished it and is amazed as well. Recommend this book to the avid reader. Thank you Mr Flowers.
I could not believe that Joey actually did these kind of things.I have known him since he was on the Capital police and always said what a friendly and smart guy he is. I really enjoyed knowing his other side. I think any one would enjoy the book they should make it into a movie.
Having grown up in the area of these stories I found book fascinating. Could not put it down. I did feel like author treated Bangs with kid gloves at times and could have been more critical. Felt court testimony dragged on bit too long too
A wonderful book that covers corruption, not just in Boston proper, but throughout the commonwealth of Massachusetts. The amount of research that went into this book is mind boggling,
A-Z
A phenomenal 480+ pages. The writing is exceptional and the author is impartial, just telling it like it is, or was. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys true-crime, nonfiction.
You won’t find better.
I still hear Joe's Boston accent through his writing. We served in Hawaii together 50 years ago before my tour in Vietnam.
Joe was quite a character, a great soldier and absolutely fearless. This book those of us who served with him know of his
subsequent career. If only he could contact another old buddy SFC Tom Harper a survivor of Pork Chop Hill, it would
cheer him up tremendously.
